These microorganisms contain two chemicals, Luciferin and Luciferase, which are compounds that produce light in bioluminescent organisms. Through the catalytic activity of the corresponding luciferase enzyme, they react with oxygen (oxidation), and most of the functional groups removed from luciferin release energy in the form of light. Muertos Beach is one of the most popular bioluminescent beach in Costa Rica located in Bahía Ballena Pochote so close to santa teresa costa rica , or as it is also called Bahía tambor, with an exuberant marine and terrestrial biodiversity, surrounded by a huge mangrove that extends through a channel of approximately 2 kilometers and it is a beach of bioluminescent waves, approximately 30 minutes by car from Santa Teresa Costa Rica
The most common question we get here at Raccoon Travels is: when is the best time to see the bioluminescence? While we see bioluminescence all year long, your bioluminescent experience can depend on the time of year as well as what phase the moon is in. In the summer months, we see a bioluminescence produced by dinoflagellates. In the rainy months, we see a bioluminescence produced by comb jellies. In certain months while we transition between the dinoflagellates and comb bacterias, we are often able to see both of them out on the water!
While we typically see the bioluminescence nightly throughout the year, the optimal time for viewing is around new moons when there will be no moonlight reflecting on the water. In the dry months, during these darkened nights, the bioluminescent plankton give off a neon blue glow! You don’t have to go on the exact night of the new moon. The week surrounding the new moon is also a great time to go for example in tambor bay we can perform the tour 3 days after the full moon, because the moon hides behind the mountain and block all the brightness. If you are planning to go on a new moon night, or weekend, book well in advance as these tours sell out.

My boyfriend and I were staying in Santa Teresa but decided it was worth the drive to Pochote to try this unique experience and we’re so glad we did. Josue and his crew were amazing! They were friendly, knowledgeable and we definitely felt like we were in good hands. They took us through the mangroves, then to a beautiful secluded beach to watch the sunset and chill and they even fed us some delicious snacks. And once it got dark, they brought us out to experience the magical sparkling of the bioluminescence. Every time we moved the water lit up and sparkled…such a cool experience. I highly recommend taking this tour if you want to try something unique in Costa Rica. Since we didn’t want to drive at night, Josue also arranged to have a taxi take us to and from Santa Teresa for a reasonable price. We also love the fact that Josue donates a portion of his earnings to his local community and school. ❤️
This tour was one of the highlights of our entire trip! The tour guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. This tour takes you to one of the most beautiful beaches to each fruit and watch the sunset. Then getting to snorkel in the dark under the stars with the bioluminescence plankton was one of the coolest experiences of my life. It was straight out of Avatar! Would highly recommend going with this tour, they are the best!
