FAQ

What is Bioluminescence?

We explain it to you In our Bioluminescence Tour in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica!

In the ocean, we have thousands of bacteria and dinoflagellates, commonly known as bioluminescent plankton. These microorganisms contain two chemicals, Luciferin and Luciferase, which are compounds that produce light in bioluminescent organisms. This stunning phenomenon creates a bioluminescent beach that you won’t forget. Through the catalytic activity of the corresponding luciferase enzyme, they react with oxygen (oxidation), and most of the functional groups removed from luciferin release energy in the form of light. Both luciferins and luciferases are taxon-specific, which means they are characteristic of each species.

In Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, you can witness this beautiful and unique natural occurrence with our bioluminescent tour. Our tour takes you to the best spots to see this stunning phenomenon up close and personal. You’ll be amazed by the radiant beauty of the bioluminescence, and it is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

Where do we perform Bioluminescence Tour Santa Teresa Costa Rica?

Muertos Beach is one of the most popular bioluminescent beach in Costa Rica located in Bahía Ballena Pochote so close to santa teresa costa rica , or as it is also called Bahía tambor, with an exuberant marine and terrestrial biodiversity, surrounded by a huge mangrove that extends through a channel of approximately 2 kilometers and it is a beach of bioluminescent waves, approximately 30 minutes by car from Santa Teresa Costa Rica

When Is The Best Time To See Bioluminescence in Santa teresa or Montezuma?

The most common question we get here at Raccoon Travels is: when is the best time to see the bioluminescence? While we see bioluminescence all year long, your bioluminescent experience can depend on the time of year as well as what phase the moon is in. In the summer months, we see a bioluminescence produced by dinoflagellates. In the rainy months, we see a bioluminescence produced by comb jellies. In certain months while we transition between the dinoflagellates and comb bacterias, we are often able to see both of them out on the water!

Is the New Moon the Best Time to See Bioluminescence?

While we typically see the bioluminescence nightly throughout the year, the optimal time for viewing is around new moons when there will be no moonlight reflecting on the water. In the dry months, during these darkened nights, the bioluminescent plankton give off a neon blue glow! You don’t have to go on the exact night of the new moon. The week surrounding the new moon is also a great time to go for example in tambor bay we can perform the tour 3 days after the full moon, because the moon hides behind the mountain and block all the brightness. If you are planning to go on a new moon night, or weekend, book well in advance as these tours sell out.

If you’re planning your 2023  bioluminescence tour, check out our calendar below to help pick the best time for you to view the bioluminescence.

The best bioluminescence tour with William and el capitain Jonathan who did everything to make the trip enjoyable. They took us to the most amazing beach bar while we waited for darkness – it truly was like paradise…other boats had the same idea but they had a lot more passengers while we had our boat to ourselves. Once dark, we got back on the boat to go round the headland to see the bioluminescence. Along the way, William gave an excellent explanation before we arrived and had the opportunity for a nighttime dip – to be swimming amongst the lights was surreal and magical.

Thanks again to William and Jonathan for the memorable experience….and the fact that you’re doing so much to help support the local community makes it even more rewarding 👍👍👍👍
